Hawks defenseman will continue career close to home

Three-year Hawks defenseman Vito Biondo III has choosen a college to continue his hockey career.

Biondo, 20, has committed to Maryville University in his hometown of St. Louis, Miss. for next year after his junior eligibility with Nipawin in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) concludes.

Biondo joined the Hawks in 2022-23, he went on to play 42 games his first year scoring twice and adding 10 assists. He was also named Nipawin’s rookie of the year that season. Last year he scored twice and added 15 assists, currently this year after rejoining the team following a stint with the Maine Nordiques of the North American Hockey League Biondo has another pair of goals and 10 assists in 40 games.

Head Coach and General Manager Tad Kozun is happy to see his top defender commit to a college to continue his career.

“Vito has been a tremendous Hawk and I knew a good program would seek his services,” Kozun added. “Killing penalties, playing the powerplay, he has done it all for us and I am sure that will continue with the Saints.”

The Hawks host Melville on Saturday at 7 p.m.
