Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation’s Cole Ahenakew continues to inspire in the ring.

Last Saturday, Edmonton’s South Side Legion Boxing Club held a big event and Ahenakew defeated Sam Sorg by unanimous decision.

“It was a good fight and everything just clicked,” Ahenakew told paNOW. “It was probably one of my best fights ever.”

Ahenakew normally trains at the Red Wolf Boxing Club in Prince Albert under coach Braddock Koch, but for this fight he had Saskatoon’s Gary Kopas in his corner.

“Everything he was telling me to do was just working,” Ahenakew explained.

Prior to Edmonton, Ahenakew was scheduled to fight at a silver gloves tournament but had to withdraw at the last minute because he was very ill. And prior to that he lost by split decision to one of the country’s top ranked fighters Jacob Pagaling.

“I just took from that and I really did good against him,” Ahenakew said.

In addition to having his hands raised in victory, Ahenakew was also awarded a special belt for “Best Boxer” of the night in the 65kg. weight class.

He now has over 30 fights under his belt and when asked about goals this year, he said he is just taking it one fight at a time.

Braddock Koch noted Ahenakew has really overcome a lot of obstacles and has really come into his own.

“He is everything I thought he’d be and more,” he said.
