An inquest into the death of Dillon McDonald in Montreal Lake in 2021 will happen in March, the Saskatchewan Coroner’s Service announced on Wednesday.

Originally, the inquest was to happen in January but was delayed because of the postal strike.

McDonald, age 28, was shot and killed following an altercation with RCMP officers in Montreal Lake on December 14, 2021.

McDonald, was released from jail Dec. 8 with conditions that he live at his sister’s home in Stanley Mission, was also not to be within five kilometres of the Montreal Lake border unless he was leaving Stanley Mission to go to Prince Albert or for court.

He was facing charges of having a sawed off .22 rifle in his possession, which was a breach of another condition that he not have any weapons in his possession.

In hours leading up to his death, McDonald had been reported as being in a home with a gun. He barricaded himself inside after using the gun to chase another man out of the house.

A witness recorded as McDonald left the home with his hands in the air, holding an object.

Officers in the video instruct him to put the gun down several times and then there were gunshots.

Mcdonald died on the way to the hospital.

The inquest will look into the circumstances surrounding McDonald’s death and a six-member jury will be given the task of hearing the evidence and establishing who died, when and where the person died and medical cause and manner of the person’s death.

Juries can also make recommendations if they think similar circumstances can be avoided in the future.

Coroner Robert Kennedy, K.C. will preside at the inquest.
