Buffalo River murder case committed for trial

Feb 11, 2025 | 5:00 PM

A murder case stemming from an altercation that occurred between two men at Buffalo River Dene Nation, has now been formally committed for trial.

Nathan Billette will be tried at Court of King’s Bench in Battleford.

The preliminary inquiry hearing was held on Feb. 5 in Dillon and determined a charge of second degree murder was most suitable for the alleged offence.

In the early morning hours of Sept. 13, 2023, RCMP received a report of an injured person at a residence on the reserve. George Bekkattla, 55, was declared deceased at the scene by paramedics.

Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes took carriage of the investigation and later that morning, Billette, who was 41 at the time, was arrested.

At this time, no trial dates have been set. Those will be determined during a pre-trial hearing and the next scheduled sitting is on Feb. 14.
