Raiders back at top of East Division after win over Moose Jaw

Feb 22, 2025 | 7:57 AM

After the Raiders lost the top spot in the East Division on Tuesday with a matchup against the Brandon Wheat Kings, the Raiders were looking to get back in the win column on Friday against the Moose Jaw Warriors. The Raiders didn’t dominate from start to finish the same way they did on Monday, but they took care of business and carried a lead from the first period through the rest of the way to pick up a 4-1 win.

The Raiders started the scoring just 4:15 into the first period on their first powerplay of the game. Lukas Dragicevic would take a shot from the left point that would be blocked off the skate of Brayden Dube and bounce back to Tomas Mrsic at the right point, and he’d fire a shot that was tipped in front by Niall Crocker. He’d be stopped, find his own rebound, and Crocker would put it into the back of the net for his 24th of the season.

Then at the 8:15 mark, Ty Meunier would continue to show the confidence he has found as a scorer. Given some time and space down the left wall, Meunier would take a shot from a sharp angle and beat the goaltender short side when it looked like there was no room. Assists would come from Justice Christensen and Dexon Rudolph.

At the 9:33 mark, Raiders fans would get to cheer for a first goal as a member of the team. Aiden Oiring streaked in down the right side and he fired a shot that would go wide and bounce off the wall to Mrsic on the left side. He would send the puck back to the middle of the point for Matteo Fabrizi, and he’d fire on goal to find the back of the net off a defender’s leg for his third of the season and his first as a Raider.

The Warriors would get one of their own before the end of the period when Linden Lakovic would get the puck on the right side on the powerplay after some sustained pressure, and at 19:41 he’d rip a wrist shot in to give the Warriors some life.

After 1: Raiders 3 – 1 Warriors, shots 13-10 Raiders

The Raiders second period saw them continue to create chances, but they wouldn’t find the back of the net. The biggest play of the second period saw Max Hildebrand make a save off a shot from the point, but a rebound would pop out to former Raider Krzysztof Macias on the door step. Macias thought he had a guaranteed goal, but Hildebrand snapped out the glove to rob his former teammate.

During the period, Harrison Lodewyk managed to use he speed and size to breakaway twice, once with enough space to make a move and the other where he was rushed to shoot, but wasn’t able to find the back of the net on either chance.

After 2: Raiders 3 – 1 Warriors, shots 14-10 Raiders, 27-20 Raiders overall

The Raiders would get another breakaway early in the third, and he’d fire from distance and be stopped with a defender quickly closing in.

In the final three minutes of the game, the Warriors would pull their goaltender to try and make up the two goal difference. Instead, Dragicevic would block a shot and pick up his own rebound, centre it for Dube, and Dube would find Oiring heading down the right wall with open ice, and at 18:17 Oiring would hit the back of the empty net from centre ice for his 22nd of the season.

FINAL: Raiders 4 – 1 Warriors, shots 13-9 Raiders, 40-29 Raiders overall

Outside of the game, the Raiders got some help from the Calgary Hitmen who beat the Brandon Wheat Kings, meaning the Raiders pulled back ahead of the Brandon Wheat Kings for that top spot in the East Division.

The Raiders will try to hold that top spot with a battle against the Regina Pats on the road on Saturday.
