It was a triumphant weekend for young soccer players from Battlefords United FC as they earned top individual honours and brought home multiple medals from recent tournaments.

The club showcased its talent at the Sask Cup in Regina, where two standout players received prestigious awards.

“Our U17 boy Billie Smallchild was voted MVP of the U17 boys division,” said club director Kat Huxley. “And this is voted on by the opposing teams they play in round-robin play.”

Adding to the accolades, U15 goalkeeper Bradley McEachern was named MVP of his division, earning individual honours for his outstanding play and leadership.

Despite the team narrowly missing out on a medal, Huxley said McEachern and Smallchild’s skills and sportsmanship made them a clear choice for the award.

The U15 boys’ team was also recognized with the Fair Play Award, which highlights the players’ respect throughout the tournament.

“The Fair Play Award is voted on by referees and officials based on how you treat your teammates, how you treat your opponents, how you treat the facility, and how you treat the officials during each of your round-robin games,” she said.

“Even though we didn’t reach the gold medal or the medal games, we were still recognized as a team that had amazing players and well-mannered athletes, which is great for our community and our club as a whole.”

Beyond the success from last weekend, the club had a dominant showing at the Saskatoon Soccer Club’s Annual Indoor Tournament, held Feb. 14-17, collecting three medals.

“We had a very good showing from all of our age groups,” Huxley said. “Which was absolutely fantastic, and we ended up coming home with two gold and one silver.”

The U15 boys’ and U13 girls’ teams both secured gold, while the U13 girls’ second team finished with a hard-fought silver after a tense shootout.

“Unfortunately, they lost in a shootout, which is always a tough, tough loss,” she said.

Now, the club shifts its focus to the EWZSA Slush Cup in Edmonton on Feb. 27-28, where the teams hope to carry their winning momentum forward.

“Our U15 and U17 girls have set goals for themselves to come home with a gold medal,” Huxley said. “Our U15 boys are also expecting to reach the medal game.”

As the club continues to push for success, it remains focused on both physical preparation and mental resilience.

“Even though our athletes are very good physically on the field, it’s also important to have conversations about their mental performance,” Huxley said. “That’s what wins games at the end of the day.”

With gold medals, MVPs and sportsmanship honours in hand, Huxley is confident Battlefords United FC is proving itself as a force to be reckoned with on the provincial stage.
