Council undecided on shipping containers, arts council grant

Feb 25, 2025 | 1:51 PM

La Ronge council didn’t make any decisions at a regular meeting on Monday in regards to the expansion of shipping container usage or a monetary request from the La Ronge Arts Club.

Council discussed whether or not to expand the usage of shipping containers into the Recreational and Parks, General Commercial and Shoreline Commercial Districts, but they felt there weren’t enough requirements in place to proceed.

For instance, it was brought up that shipping containers shouldn’t be able to be placed in front of a building along a street.

Shipping containers are uses in themselves and are treated just like buildings. This means that anyone proposing to put a shipping container on a property in a zoning district must obtain a development permit and a building permit just like they would for a building.

Each zoning district in which a shipping containers are permitted has specific regulations that must be followed.

“I’ll go ahead and draft something up and bring it back to council for review,” Deputy-Chief Administrative Officer Jeff Long said in reply to council’s concerns.

In regards to the arts council request, which was for $5,000 to help enhance the La Ronge Arts Gallery space in order to look more professional by purchasing two six-foot benches, six display cases, shelving for the display cases, a La Ronge Arts Council sign, and supplies to have free paint nights at the library, it was discussed that council doesn’t typically provide funding for capital expenses through its community grant program unless it’s in regards to startup costs.

“Every group only gets one funding allotment, so if we can communicate there is some hesitancy to give the level they are seeking for this particular purpose, but perhaps we can work with them on … some other ideas,” Chief Administrative Officer Lyle Hannan said.

The next La Ronge council meeting is set for March 10.
