Above seasonal temperatures to return this weekend

The above normal temperatures will return to the province this weekend.

A week of warmer-than-average weather came to an end on Friday, but the cooldown will be brief.

Stephen Berg of Environment and Climate Change Canada said temperatures will bounce back to near zero for the weekend, into Monday.

“A little bit of a gradual cooldown after that but it still stays fairly nice, still above normal,” said Berg.

The normal high for this time of year is around –6 C, with the lows at –18 C.

“[We’re] looking at anywhere from about three to about seven degrees above normal for the next few days, anyway,” Berg said.

The temperatures near or slightly above zero and nighttime lows below freezing have led to a slow snow melt so far. Berg said that helps prevent overland flooding or river flooding from taking place. Homeowners also appreciate the slower melt to avoid seepage into basements. Berg also reminds motorists to be aware of potential icy roads and pavement frost coming out as the freeze-thaw cycle continues.

Despite the warming conditions, Berg doesn’t expect much in the way of precipitation over the next week.

“Looks [like] pretty clear sailing for this weekend and beyond into next weekend,” said Berg.
