Prince Albert man reflects on home invasion and robbery

Mar 5, 2025 | 6:00 AM

A man who was awakened by the sound of strangers in his home, says it never once crossed his mind he was dealing with youth.

Just over five days have passed since Joshua Stumpf’s apartment was broken into and his car stolen. Two teenaged youth, 14 and 16, were later arrested and charged.

Early Friday morning, a little before 6:30 a.m, Stumpf was nudged awake by his girlfriend, who was lying in bed beside him. She expressed concern someone may be in the house.

“And at first I thought she was just messing around,” he said.

However, after emerging from his bedroom, Stumpf discovered there were in fact two strangers in his kitchen.

Stumpf, an accomplished musician, travels a lot and while he was away last week, his girlfriend had placed a knife in the bedroom for protection.

“So I went and grabbed the knife and then I ran out to the kitchen, waving the knife in the air and said get the (expletive) out of my house,” he explained.

The two intruders, who had gained entry to the apartment by smashing their way through the deadlocked door, fled and Stumpf immediately called police. The officers showed up within 10 minutes and immediately began their investigation into what if anything had been taken.

“The one officer came back inside and said I think your car is gone,” he said.

The vehicle, belonging to Stumpf’s girlfriend, was soon after involved in a hit and run with a parked vehicle in the 500 block of 10th Street East. It was later located in the 800 block of River Street West and the two suspects were arrested without incident.

Stumpf acknowledged his own surprise when he found out how young they were.

“The description I gave the cops was I thought they were in their early 20s, like they were tall,” he recalled.

The two youth are scheduled to make their next appearances at Prince Albert Provincial Court on Wednesday.

In the meantime, Stumpf, who acknowledged thoughts on moving, and who has never before had an experience like this, confirmed his own plans to increase his home security.
