Ratt showcased in second local art exhibit

Lac La Ronge Indian Band member Molly Ratt has a new art gallery on exhibit for the month of March at the Alex Robertson Public Library.

Entitled The Wonders of Nature, the exhibit encompasses eight acrylic artworks showcasing the landscape of Northern Saskatchewan. This marks the second time Ratt has been featured in a La Ronge Arts Council gallery with the first being in October 2019.

“It’s mostly about the landscapes of our surroundings areas, but some of it is off my head too,” she explained.

“I think of something that I see in my head and will work on that and paint it. It’s mostly about the landscape, nature, anything like that is mainly what I do.”

The artwork includes a variety of seasons and subject matter. For instance, there’s one painting called Dancing Clouds which she calls an interesting piece. She said it’s different than all the rest but still follows the theme of landscapes.

Ratt, who is a self-taught artist, began painting in 2004 and started doing it as a partial career in 2014. She noted since her first exhibit with the arts council about six years ago, of whom she is now an annual member, she has continued to develop as a professional.

Ratt’s work is also being noticed by more people. For instance, she’s showcased her work through the Kyla Artist Group in Prince Albert and the Mann Art Gallery has reached out to her as well. Ratt has also been the recipient of art grants in recent years.

“I am doing ornaments now, painting ornaments,” she remarked.

“That’s another thing. I make a lot of those. Those are popular every season, so I have to make quite a bit through the year. Custom ornaments are the biggest ones that everybody wants, so that’s something I have to work on ahead of time before the season.”

While her exhibit will be on display the entire month and can be accessed during library hours, the public is also invited to a reception on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
