Gage Grassick is the best in the West.

The fourth-year Prince Albert product was named the Canada West Women’s Basketball Player of the Year on Thursday following a stellar season with the top-seeded University of Saskatchewan Huskies.

Grassick averaged the second most points per game in the conference with 18.4, while leading in assists per game (6.0) and three-point shooting (41.4%). Additionally, she scored 20 or more points in seven games over the season and etched herself into the history books, becoming the 12th player in Canada West history to score a triple double with an 18-point, 10-rebound, 11-assist outing in a 92-48 beatdown of the Manitoba Bisons on Nov. 9.

With the honour, the Carlton alumni also becomes the eighth U of S student-athlete to be named the Canada West Women’s Basketball Player of the Year, following Carly Ahlstrom, Sabine Dukate, Laura Dally, fellow Prince Albertan Dalyce Emmerson, Kim Tulloch, and two-time winner Sarah Crooks.

Over her career at the college level, Grassick has averaged 12.9 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game over 85 career appearances. She was named a USPORTS Academic All-Canadian in 2021 and 2022, was a Canada West Third Team All-Star in 2023 and was named a Canada West First Team All-Star in 2025.

Grassick wasn’t the only Huskie to receive an award as Head Coach Lisa Thomaidis was crowned the Canada West Coach of the Year.

The honour is Thomaidis’ second consecutive and seventh overall over her impressive 26-year tenure with the Huskies, having won the award in 2004, 2006, 2009, 2011, 2016, and 2024.

In search of her 10th conference title, she guided the program to a conference tying 18-2 record this season, which included an 18-game win streak. She led the Huskies to the No. 1 seed entering the playoffs where they currently rank second in the country in the USPORTS Top 10 rankings.

Thomaidis also became the winningest coach in Canada West women’s basketball history this season, surpassing former UBC head coach Deb Huband with her 345th regular season win.

The Huskies are back in action on Saturday when they host the UBC Thunderbirds in the Canada West Championships. The opening tipoff is set for 5 p.m.
