U18 AA Foxes advance to North Final after sweeping top-seeded Saskatoon

Mar 9, 2025 | 3:14 PM

The Prince Albert Family Pizza Foxes are back in the North Final of the Sask. Female U18 AA Hockey League (SaskFHL) after defeating the Saskatoon Comet Legends in their second round matchup.

The Foxes came in as the underdogs, the fourth-ranked team in the North and managed to sweep the first-seeded Comets in their best-of-three matchup with a 4-2 win in Game 1, and a 3-2 win in Game 2.

The second-round win comes after the Foxes defeated the Western Prairie Thunder 2-1 in their first round series.

Game 1 was Thursday in Saskatoon which saw both sides strike early. Natasha Gyoerick got P.A. on the board just 18 seconds in, but penalty trouble cost the Foxes as Gabrielle Zaleschuk converted on the powerplay less than two minutes later to tie it up.

It remained 1-1 entering the second where P.A. managed three unanswered goals to start the period. Jaryn Fidler tallied one on the man advantage, Marti Burechailo scored shorthanded, and Caitlyn Richmond found the back of the net at even strength, all before the midway mark of the frame.

Saskatoon did get one back though in the final minutes, with Alex Danyluk scoring on the powerplay to cut the deficit to two.

However, both goalies on either end stood tall throughout the remainder of the game as the Foxes took a 1-0 series lead with a 4-2 Game 1 win.

P.A.’s Brianna Brataschuk managed an impressive 39 saves for the win, while Bronwen Senko made 24 stops for the Comets in the loss.

COMPLETE BOX SCORE (Game 1)

The series shifted back to Prince Albert on Saturday afternoon for Game 2 at Dave Steuart Arena.

Once again, the Foxes broke the ice first with Burechailo scoring her second of the series on the powerplay at the 12:27 mark of the period.

The Comets answered back eight minutes later with Julie Haubrich scoring the tying marker heading into the second.

There, P.A. regained the lead thanks to Gyoerick’s early powerplay marker. But the Comets kept fighting, scoring later in the frame to tie it back up at two a piece with 6:11 to play.

The one goal Foxes lead would be restored right before the buzzer, with Reese Galloway notching her first of the playoffs to put P.A. back out in front heading into the third.

Like Game 1, neither team could light the lamp in the final frame as the Foxes managed to pull off the upset, taking down Saskatoon 2-0 in the best-of-three series with a 3-2 win in Game 2.

Sharon Head tallied 31 saves for the win in Game 2 for the Foxes, while Comets netminder Maddy Hegedus managed 17 saves in the loss.

COMPLETE BOX SCORE (Game 2)

With their round two win, Prince Albert advances to the North Final for the second straight season where they will face the winner of the Northwest Sharks and the Warman Wildcats. Their series deciding Game 3 is slated for Sunday afternoon in Warman.
