Organizers are proud of the work done during the last 10 days to make the Lac La Ronge Winter Festival a success.

There were many highlights of the winter festival, which included Gerald McKenzie and Sylvia McKenzie winning the titles of King and Queen Trapper (both won $1,500). Richard Charles took second and Norman McKenzie came in third for king, while Nora Charles and Flora Charles took second and third, respectively, for queen.

Monica Ratt was named the Winter Festival Queen after selling 13,075 tickets, and Gabe and Maureen McKay were named Mr. and Mrs. Winter Festival after being selected by the planning committee.

The winners of the Winter Classic Texas Hold’em Tournament included Cyril Sanderson, Clifford Bird and Jonathon Bird who split first and each went home with $4,000.

Pinehouse was the winner of the 13th Annual Jimmy Roberts Memorial Hockey Tournament and went home with a $5,000 prize. The La Ronge 89ers took second ($3,000), and the Pelican Raiders took third and ($2,000).

Marty Sanderson won first place in the sixth annual “Moochacheech” Memorial Jackfish Derby at Bigstone Lake, winning $2,500 for his nine-pound fish.

Tania Colbert and Annamarie Bird were the winners of the Peter Ross Memorial Crib Tournament. They collectively won $940.

In total, there was approximately $50,000 in prize money awarded throughout the Lac La Ronge Winter Festival. The events are mostly self-funded through admissions, concession sales and other fundraising aspects.

“We had a great winter festival this year,” said organizer Kevin Roberts, the director of sports and recreation at the Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre.

“There was a good turnout at most of the events we had, and it was a great finish yesterday at the hockey tournament, and King and Queen Trapper events were held yesterday, and those were great as well, so overall it was a busy time.”

Roberts also wanted to thank all of the coordinators and volunteers who came together to make the Lac La Ronge Winter Festival a possibility.
