Babington Avenue improvement approval delayed until April

The go-ahead for a local improvement project in Melfort will have to wait a while longer.

City council in Melfort did not proceed with three readings and approve the project at Monday night’s meeting.

The request for decision was on the full depth asphalt project in the 100 block of Babington Ave. E and W.

During the second reading, council could ask questions about the project.

Coun. Trent Mitchell asked for clarification as to the percentage of people that voted against the project.

Director of Public Works Kalyna Cipywnyk said during the meeting that 33 per cent of the total assessable frontage were opposed to the project going forward.

However, it was also mentioned during the meeting that letters opposing the local improvement were received after the deadline.

In a follow-up e-mail, Cipywnyk told northeastNOW the petitions “were not considered as they were submitted well after the February 14 deadline, on March 1.”

“The petitions were also not submitted in the prescribed format or filed directly with the City Clerk,” explained Cipywnyk.

Mitchell voted against a third reading of the bylaw, meaning it was not read and passed. The bylaw will once again come before council at next month’s meeting.

Mitchell told northeastNOW after the meeting that he wanted to take some extra time for council to discuss the proposed improvement, and not to rush into making the final decision.
