The John Paul II Collegiate Crusaders cheer team took to the stage this past weekend at the largest cheerleading and dance competition in Saskatchewan, the Warman Cheer Classic.

The competition brought over 3,000 athletes to compete across many different divisions and age groups at the Warman Home Centre Communiplex.

For the Crusaders, it was a spectacular weekend as they nailed both their performances on Friday and Saturday, earning first place in their division, said JPII Cheer Co-ordinator Rena Fauchon.

“The team won first place in their division, which was the Scholastic Intermediate division, and they were six others in the division. The team hit zero twice, so we performed twice, one on the Friday, one on the Saturday, and hitting zero means no safety deductions, so everything went flawless as far as the performance,” she said.

Apart from winning their division, the biggest achievement of the weekend was the team also being named the Top School of the entire competition.

Fauchan mentioned they didn’t expect to win Top School going into the competition but are very proud of the accomplishment.

“We won top school out of all those schools that were there and think there was 23 schools. This is the first year that we won everything and it’s pretty exciting. In the last competition, we had placed fourth, so when we were going into Warman, we were like let’s just do our best, we did not expect to win Top School but the team worked hard and we are so proud,” Fauchon said.

Now looking ahead to this weekend, the Crusaders get ready to head to Regina for the Saskatchewan Provincial Cheer Championships on Saturday, March 15 at the Conexus Arts Centre.

Coming off the big win in Warman, the team now has their expectations set and are working even harder to fulfill them.

“Going into this Saturday in Regina, they want to be the winning team, so they’re putting in the work. We’re expecting great results… everyone’s just training hard, we’re practicing twice a week, throwing in extra practices when we can. They want to really be successful, especially because we’re going to Vancouver to compete, everyone is going hard every practice and trying their best,” Fauchan said.

The JPII cheer team will also be heading to the Sea to Sky International Cheer Championship in Vancouver on April 5 and 6, 2025. The team hasn’t been there since 2016, when they won the competition.
