The water is in the pool and the ice is flooded.

The City of Prince Albert offered a sneak peak of the Lake Country Co-op Leisure Centre’s lobby and acquatics area on social media Friday, much to the delight of citizens who commented about their excitement and anticipation for the opening of the long-awaited facility.

The city said it will be announcing details on when it plans to officially open doors soon.

The acquatic area features a wave pool and splash area, two water slides, and a 25m pool with eight lanes that are 3.65 metres deep at its lowest point – meeting Sask Swim requirements to host competitions.

Eager hockey fans in town commented on the social media post about hoping to see their teams hit the ice soon after the city showed the South Hockey Rink featuring 264 seats. Not in the video was the North Hockey Rink that has 510 seats and 12 wheelchair spaces. The new dressing rooms alone offer a significant upgrade to those currently in use around the city. For reference, the dressing rooms at the Steuart Arena are only 310 sq/ft while the 8 dressing rooms at the leisure centre are 500 sq/ft plus two end dressing rooms at 550 sq/ft.

The Lake Country Co-op Leisure Centre is on 25 acres South East of the Marquis and 6th Avenue East Intersection. It is part of The Yard, an 80-acre development by locally owned Signature Development Corporation. The area has already seen the addition of a new hotel and restaurants and the opening of other businesses is imminent including a Starbucks and The Canadian Brewhouse.

The latest funding model for the project showed construction costs totally more than $117 million.

Meanwhile, the ‘Play it Forward’ campaign continues to invite residents to contribute a monetary donation towards it’s $20 million fundraising goal. The city’s website said they’re ‘half way there.’
