The La Ronge Ice Wolves finished the 2024-25 season one win away from earning a playoff spot in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL).

They ended the season with 53 points, which included 24 wins, 27 losses, three overtime losses and two shootout losses. The remaining three teams to also not earn a spot in the playoffs are the Estevan Bruins, Nipawin Hawks, and Notre Dame Hounds.

“It’s disappointing we couldn’t get that last win, but I am very proud of the boys,” Head Coach Kevin Kaminski said.

“We had a tough schedule down the stretch. We beat Melfort and Flin Flon and took it down to the last game. These boys gelled. They competed and battled and did they whatever it took to get to where we were at. At one point, I think we were nine points back. These guys didn’t quit, they didn’t falter, they kept on pushing hard, but unfortunately just one win short.”

The Ice Wolves held an award ceremony Sunday to recognize individual players for their efforts this past season. Most Valuable Player went to Rylan Silzer, who also took home Top Defenceman as well as Best Playmaker, which he shares alongside Hudson Cameron. Cameron also earned the award for Top Scorer.

Most Sportsman-like went to Aiden Meintz and David Vitt, Most Dedicated Player went to Cole Thomas and Graham Brown, Fans Choice and Mr. Hustle went to Jacob Cossette, and the Community Minded Award went to Nathan Da Silva.

Rookie of the Year went to Taite Donkin, Most Improved Player and Diamond in the Rough went to Grayden Perozni, the Coaches Award went to Logan Falk and Graham Brown, and the Hugh Watt Memorial “Ironman” Award went to Cole Thomas and Aiden Meintz.

There will be seven players aging out of the SJHL this season.

“These guys put in a lot of time and effort, especially the 20-year-olds,” Kaminski explained.

“We had Silzer and Cole here for three full years. You can see the development. Just with Silzer winning Sask. Player of the Year. He was our MVP. He was the set-up guy along with Hudson Cameron with assistants. Those guys, they come in here and they not only did an awesome job on the ice, they did an awesome job in the community and in the schools and working with minor hockey. That part sucks when it comes to an end and you move on now.”

Kaminski is also excited about the Ice Wolves relocating to the Lac La Ronge Indian Band’s Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre from La Ronge Mel Helgand Uniplex for the upcoming 2025-2026 season.

“I can’t say enough the Mel. I love the Mel. It has great character and everything else, but for a junior franchise, it obviously would have been nice to get a brand new building somewhere in La Ronge, but that wasn’t in the cards,” he said.

“This is exciting. I think it will definitely help out with recruiting because it is hard to get the high-end guys in La Ronge. The new locker room and the expansion of the JR and, like I said, I think it is going to not only be exciting for the players from last year, but the new players coming in.”

The Ice Wolves will next host its annual Spring Camp on April 25-27 in Aberdeen.
