North Stars fall short of comeback in Game 1 against Weyburn

Mar 22, 2025 | 1:50 AM

It was Game 1 of the first round of playoffs last night for the Battlefords North Stars and after an exciting close contest, they fell short 4-3 in a comeback attempt against the Weyburn Red Wings at Crescent Point Place in Weyburn.

For the first period, the North Stars came out at full throttle, creating good rushes and putting constant pressure on the Red Wings. Then just past the midway point of the period, Elijah Anderson got awarded a penalty shot on a breakaway and converted on it to open the game and take a 1-0 lead.

As the period went on, both teams continued to battle every possession and no one was able to add to the scoreboard, so the period went to the intermission 1-0 for Battlefords.

Coming out for the second though, thats when the tide started to turn. After a few North Star penalties, the Red Wings were able to covert on two powerplays to take a 2-1 lead. Then throughout the rest of the period, the North Stars play really started to slow down, resulting in not one but two more goals for Weyburn to go up 4-1 going into the third.

In the third period, Battlefords slowly started to claw back, finding a goal on the powerplay coming from veteran, Jordan Grill, to lessen the gap to 4-2. Then with just under two minutes left in the game, Battlefords found the back of the net again, this time shorthanded, coming from Nikita Ivashchenko to make it 4-3.

The North Stars then pulled their goalie for an extra attacker as time was winding down and even though they found some good opportunities, couldn’t convert and fell short to the Red Wings 4-3.

Battlefords had 28 shots in game, went 1/6 on the powerplay and stopped the Red Wings four out of six times on the penalty kill.

Justen Maric stopped 24/28 shots in the contest.

The North Stars are now trailing in the series 1-0 but will have a chance at redemption tonight as they take on the Red Wings again at Crescent Point Place.

Puck drop is at 7:00 p.m. and you can catch all the action with the Napa Auto Parts North Stars Hockey Broadcast on CJNB/CJNS. Ultra Print pregame show starts at 6:30 p.m.
