Second Period Explosion

Mustangs dominate Game 2, take 2-0 series lead

The Melfort Mustangs took care of business Saturday night in Game 2 against the Kindersley Klippers.

After trailing 1-0 after the first period, despite controlling most of the play, Melfort broke the game open in the second scoring five unanswered goals.

“In the first I think we dominated, but we just needed to get some traffic and needed to get to the crease. As you can tell, in the second and third we were hungry in front of the net, and we got rewarded there,” said assistant coach Tye Scherger.

“All four lines, everyone was going and generating stuff. All four lines were generating offensive time, they had their feet and the puck moving, and they had Kinderlsley lost in their own zone, so it was good to see all four lines going.”

Now up 2-0 in the best-of-seven series, Melfort will travel to Kindersley on Monday, ahead of Games 3 and 4 on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Mustangs still have yet to lose to the Klippers this season and are hoping for similar efforts on the road.

“Just stick to the game plan, we’re gonna head down there a day early, get settled in, and then get ready to go. The biggest thing is to stick to the way we go, get heavy on the forecheck and commit to the D zone,” Scherger added.

“Our penalty kill got exposed once, but other than that, there’s not really anything we need to change. Stick to the plan and be ready to go.”

Both contests will be held at the West Central Events Centre and begin with 7:30 p.m. puck drops.

The matches can be heard on 105CJVR, as the pregame shows will start at 7:10 p.m.
