The City of North Battleford’s Planning Committee will hold a special meeting on March 31, gathering the leadership of the region to focus on the future of the Access Communications Centre.

“It’s special because we’re talking about a really large project, no matter which direction we go,” Mayor Kelli Hawtin said in an interview with Nic Fransoo on the 93.3 Beach Radio morning show.

Representatives from regional municipalities, the Battlefords Tribal Council, and the Town of Battleford will attend and participate.

The meeting will include a presentation of a feasibility study outlining potential options for a new regional arena and event centre, as well as a report on the costs of maintaining or upgrading the existing facility.

“We’ve had consultants working on this [study] for a few months,’ she noted.

“It’s really about what a new facility would look like, what kind of amenities it would have. And the biggest question, what is the price point?”

Hawtin also highlighted the significance of regional collaboration.

“And signing a very special MOU [memorandum of understanding] to work together on looking at planning this project,” she said.

The meeting will be open to the public both in person and online via Zoom.

“If you’re a person that lives outside of North Battleford and you’re interested in this arena project, you really need to talk to your community councils because we’re trying to bring everybody together,” Hawtin said.

“So knowing that there is regional citizen support is very important.”

The meeting begins at 6 p.m. at the Don Ross Centre Chamber.
