Update issued on Humboldt Broncos memorial projects

The Humboldt Broncos Memorial Committee has issued an update on a pair of projects that will honour the 2017-18 team ahead of Sunday’s seventh anniversary of the tragic bus crash.

The committee issued a news release on Friday to let the public know about the progress of the two projects.

They stated in the release they continue to work to secure a paving project for phase one of the Crash Site Memorial Project. That phase will “enhance the site and ensure it remains a dignified space for reflection and remembrance for years to come.”

Site preparation began last October with some earth moving, and the creation of pathways and a sitting area.

The committee is looking for public input on phase two of the memorial, which includes design plans. That phase will focus on the memorial to honour the 16 people killed in the bus crash Apr. 6, 2018, as well as the 13 survivors that have been forever impacted by the crash. The memorial site is at the intersection of Highways 35 and 335, between Tisdale and Nipawin.

Meanwhile, the Humboldt Tribute Centre project is geared toward serving as a facility to honour the team, and display items the community received from around the world following the tragic crash. The Memorial Committee supports a local initiative to engage the community on ideas including a design, building the next recreational facility, and funding, as the project has not yet been successful in receiving a construction grant.

“The plan is to respectfully integrate an appropriate tribute space within this new facility,” the release stated.

Anyone looking to help out by volunteering for the project, or contributing financially, can visit the Humboldt Broncos Tribute Campaign website.
