New course to focus on healthy eating, nutrition

Apr 8, 2025 | 4:23 PM

Residents are being encouraged to sign up for an eight-week nutrition course called Eating Well in the North.

It’s being held virtually online via Zoom by the Lac La Ronge Indian Band and led by Saskatoon registered dietitian Darian Kotchorek. The classes, which will be every Wednesday from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. starting April 30, will include topics such as managing chronic health conditions such as diabetes, nutrition foundations, protein, vegetables and fruits, carbs, fats, mindful eating, hydration, planning, shopping and preparing meals.

It will also focus on reading nutrition labels and building sustainable habits.

Program coordinator Shivon Venne came up with the idea for the nutrition course because she doesn’t believe enough people know enough about the topic.

“I believe these kind of programs are important because I think it’s a situation of just not knowing,” she explained.

“Honestly, even when I went to high school, I don’t exactly remember in health class being told you had to have these essential vitamins and nutrients in order to be healthy.”

Food insecurity in Northern Saskatchewan has been a topic of discussion for many years, and in recent months, it came to light many residents in the La Ronge area experience a lack of Vitamin C. Venne noted she was shocked to learn in 2024 more than two dozen people had been diagnosed with scurvy.

“Some people might not know what to eat, so their body can be the best version it can be,” she added.

“Anything you eat, you’re going to need some fiber, you’re going to need a veggie, you’re going to need a protein and a carb, and those essential minerals make you the healthiest person you can be, but I don’t think too many people realize what it takes to make your body the healthiest it can be.”

The course is opened to all residents of the tri-communities, as well as Lac La Ronge Indian Band members living in surrounding communities. To reserve a spot, reach out to Venne at 1-306-420-5787.
