Lemaigre sets eyes on Ottawa as federal election approaches

Former Saskatchewan Party MLA Jim Lemaigre is now looking to voters in the federal Desnethé-Missinippi-Churchill River riding to elect him as their MP.

He’s running as a candidate for the Conservative Party in the upcoming federal election on April 28. Lemaigre previously served as an MLA from February 2022 to October 2024 following a provincial byelection in Athabasca.

With the federal election approaching, Lemaigre explained voters should think about who is going to represent Northern Saskatchewan and what that will look like.

“We’ve had 10 years of Liberal government and the Conservative Party in opposition and here’s an opportunity where we see a shift happening,” he said.

“In Northern Saskatchewan, there’s a choice to be made and I think that’s where a lot of people are, their minds are at, like which party do we support and who’s going to represent us well.”

If elected, Lemaigre would like to advocate for supports for housing, homelessness, addictions, public safety, cost of living and transportation. He also wants to work to bring more control to First Nations.

For instance, he mentioned there’s a large backlog in Jordan’s Principal applications.

“The one thing that the Conservative government is speaking to is empowering First Nations,” Lemaigre added.

“That we believe in less power for the federal government and more power for First Nations, and one of the things we are proposing is a First Nations resource charge that enables First Nations to take back control of their resources and money. Right now, we have such an administrative bureaucratic process in place.”

Lemaigre has approximately 27 years of service in Northern Saskatchewan working in suicide prevention and with the RCMP. He has lived in several different communities, and he’s served as a band councillor for Clearwater River Dene Nation.

If elected, Lemaigre would like to continue building relationships within government as he did as an MLA.

“At one point in our history, this opportunity wasn’t possible. But now I stood on the floor of the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan and spoke my language and I addressed the people of Saskatchewan,” he said.

“So, here we have an opportunity to continue building that relationship and taking our concerns and showing results in Ottawa on behalf on Northern Saskatchewan.”
