Prior to being arrested in Saskatoon last week, a youth who was in breach of a curfew and over 100 kilometres away from his approved residence refused to exit a vehicle and flashed a gun at police.

These were among the details heard during the 17-year-old’s bail hearing on Wednesday at Prince Albert Provincial Court.

On April 6, the youth was one of four people arrested during a traffic stop after the white Chevrolet Equinox they were travelling in had been involved in a flight from police the night before.

In addition to the gun found in the waistband of the boy’s pants, police also seized a pair of bandanas, a small amount of drugs (magic mushrooms), brass knuckles, and 88 rounds of ammunition that were inside a bag in the backseat.

In addition to the Saskatoon charges, the youth also has a number of serious charges from Sturgeon Lake First Nation.

On Dec. 5, 2024, it’s alleged he was behind the wheel of a stolen vehicle that was observed travelling 130km/hr in a 90km/hr zone. After leaving a store at Wahpeton Dakota Nation, the boy was confronted by police and fled at a high rate of speed, at times exceeding 160km/hr on grid roads.

With police in pursuit, multiple “heavy objects” were tossed from the vehicle, including a loaded shotgun. Following the deployment of a spike belt, the vehicle was eventually brought to a stop at Sturgeon Lake First Nation.

The driver did not have a license and there was a strong smell of alcohol on his breath. Inside the vehicle, police found black bandanas and small quantities of cocaine and meth.

With consent from the Crown prosecutor, the youth was released soon after.

On March 17, police were called to a home on Sturgeon Lake and were told the boy had attacked another person with a machete. The argument had to do with some keys to a quad.

The next day, the youth was released again with consent from the Crown.

With respect to the incident in Saskatoon, the boy’s lawyer told the judge the items seized belonged to the driver of the vehicle, and they had told the boy to hide the gun.

For the evading incident, the boy claimed he panicked after learning the car he thought he had permission to drive was reported as stolen. And for the alleged aggravated assault, the boy said he acted in self-defence and that it was the victim who first brandished the edged weapon.

In the end, the boy was denied bail. Judge Healey said he had no confidence the youth would abide by any conditions imposed by the court. He also suggested his belief that the boy would soon go back to re-offending.

Throughout the hour-long hearing, the youth stood in the prisoner’s box with his arms crossed.

The Saskatoon charges have been adjourned to April 23, and the Prince Albert matters were adjourned to April 30.
