Prince Albert Police Service “encouraged” by changes to Street Weapons Act

The Prince Albert Police Service said it is encouraged by new provincial legislation that amends the Safe Public Spaces (Street Weapons) Act to include fentanyl, methamphetamine, and hypodermic needles as regulated items.

A statement provided to paNOW was made in response to this week’s announcement from the provincial government, which indicated plans to pass the legislation during the spring legislative session.

“As a police service that continues to respond to the devastating consequences of fentanyl, methamphetamine, and drug-related street activity, we recognize the importance of ensuring that frontline officers have the appropriate legal framework to address emerging public safety concerns,” the police service said.

The statement also acknowledged the government’s stated intent to include exemptions that respect the legitimate and lawful use of such items—for example, in medical settings or for protection in remote or rural environments.

“It is important that any legislation be clear, enforceable, and fair, with adequate guidance provided to those responsible for its implementation.”

The statement from the city’s police service further noted that while the final wording of the amendments and related regulations are forthcoming, they support the broader direction this legislation represents and remain committed to working collaboratively with the province, municipalities, and Indigenous partners to enhance safety in the community.

Once in force, the act will enable municipalities and First Nations to opt in to new rules to regulate the possession, transportation and storage of items potentially used as street weapons, such as large knives, machetes, hypodermic needles and bear spray.
