A pair of La Ronge Ice Wolves have committed to post-secondary programs for next season.

On Tuesday, the team announced that forward Brett Boucher will head south for 2025-26, playing NCAA Division III hockey for the Albertus Magnus College Falcons in New Haven, Connecticut. A day later, on Wednesday, the Wolves announced another commitment, revealing that captain Rylan Silzer will stay closer to home and play for the University of Regina Cougars in USPORTS next year.

Boucher spent three seasons playing Jr. A in Western Canada, with just a part of that coming in La Ronge.

He got his start playing for his hometown Fort McMurray Barons in the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL), where he scored 28 points (10G-18A) in 84 games across two seasons. Before this season started, he moved to Saskatchewan, signing with the Battlefords North Stars before being dealt to La Ronge in a trade back in December.

Across 44 career contests in the SJHL, the 20-year-old left winger managed six goals and 19 assists. Now, Boucher joins Albertus Magnus who finished eighth out of 11 teams in the New England Hockey Conference this past season with a 9-10-1-3-2 (W-L-T-OTW-OTL) record.

For Silzer, he spent three full seasons playing in La Ronge, scoring 83 career points (24G-59A) in 155 games while appearing in six playoff contests in 2023. The big body blueliner was named the Sask. Player of the Year this past season, and was also nominated for the Top Defenceman award.

“It was an amazing privilege. For the boys to trust me to be their leader, it was awesome. I enjoyed it all,” Silzer said in an interview after receiving his awards.

The Swift Current native now heads closer to home to Regina, where he’ll suit up for the Cougars next year, a team that finished eighth in Canada West USPORTS this season with a 5-23 record (W-L).

Earlier this year, it was announced that the Ice Wolves will be moving from their longtime home at the Mel Hegland Uniplex down the road to the Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre on the nearby Lac La Ronge Indian Band, near Air Ronge.

The team will start play in their new home next season.
