PACI hosts student vote ahead of Federal Election

Apr 17, 2025 | 2:55 PM

With the Canadian federal election set for the end of the month, Grade 9 and 10 students at Prince Albert Collegiate Institute (PACI) were given an opportunity to learn about how the elections work through the Student Vote Canada program.

For Grade 9 student Payton Lusier, this was her first experience with voting or elections at all. With what she learned in her classes leading up to it, as well as outside of the classroom, nothing about the voting process came as much of a surprise.

“Over the last week, we’ve been learning all about the candidates and who they are and what they are going to do for us as Canadians. Everything we’ve learned, I kind of already knew because I’ve always kind of been into voting and stuff, so nothing really surprised me about it.”

Also taking part in this year’s vote was Grade 10 student Rosemary Wilson, who was one of the ballot counters in last year’s student vote.

“It’s good to learn more about the stuff in person, and you get to interact with a lot of people.”

This year, she was only a voter in the school’s mock election, but Wilson will serve a role in the real election coming up this year as an Information Officer.

“I’ll be the first person you see when you walk in, and I basically just ask if you have your ID, and I show you to where the registrar is, and then the registrar people will register you and show you where to go.”

With 50 students participating in the vote, 43% voted for the Liberals, 33% for the Conservatives, and the remaining 24% voted NDP.

Both Lusier and Wilson were willing to make their votes public, and both of them voted Liberal.

“I just think that Liberal will be the best choice overall because from everything he said and all that, I resonate with that the most, and I’ve liked everything he said about what he’ll do for us.”

The full results from PACI’s Student Vote will be available later on the Student Vote Canada website.
