The cause of a house fire on Sunday in Prince Albert’s East Hill area is under investigation.’

At approximately 4p.m., the Prince Albert Fire Department responded to the 400 block of 19th Street East.

On arrival crews found heavy smoke coming from the second storey of a two storey home. The fire was quickly extinguished by firefighters, however there was significant damage to the second storey bedroom.

Earlier Sunday evening, Prince Albert Police Service advised the public there would be a “police presence” in the 400 block of 19th Street East and asked members of the public to avoid the area.

A statement from police indicated an update will be provided when available.

Meanwhile a woman who called 9-1-1, told paNOW the two incidents are connected. She said about 15 mins. prior to seeing smoke at the house, she heard a muffled “gunshot” noise. The woman could not confirm if it was actually a cause of the fire.

“Within a minute or two there was thicker smoke emerging so I stepped onto my side walk and noticed there was too much smoke to be from a fire pit, so I quickly locked my door and ran over to the house and started banging on the door while on the phone with 911. No one answered so i banged on several windows.”

The woman explained some neighbors came running out and offered to help.

“I banged on several windows while another girl tried to kick the door in, we were unsuccessful in opening the door. The fire department, ambulance and police all arrived in under 4 minutes.”

The woman also confirmed she did see one person being carried out from the house.
