Fundraiser underway for local paramedic grads struck by car in Vegas

A fundraiser for two women from Prince Albert who were struck by a vehicle at a Las Vegas cross walk several days ago is nearing $50,000.

Katrine Sinclair and Charlie Lastowsky both sustained what have been described as ‘severe, life-altering injuries’ and are hospitalized in Las Vegas, a situation that led another local woman to start the fundraiser.

“On April 18th, two vibrant young women, Katrine Sinclair and Charlie Lastowsky from Saskatchewan were tragically struck by a car while walking a crosswalk in Las Vegas, Nevada. Both sustained severe life altering injuries which lead to undergoing surgery. They are both in hospital care in the U.S. They are far from home, without access to Canadian healthcare, and—most urgently—without health insurance to cover the overwhelming medical expenses,” said Shaylynn Natahow in the GoFundMe she created.

Her post of the incident was shared by the Prince Albert Firefighters Facebook page where it has gained some traction with almost 200 shares.

Sinclair and Lastowsky both recently graduated together as paramedics and went on a trip that was meant to be ‘a life-enriching experience’ but ended in a much more serious note.

Both were un-insured for international medical care and now face high costs for the surgeries and EMS responses.

“They have already undergone surgeries and face a long, painful road to recovery—physically, emotionally, and financially,” wrote Naytowhow.

Every donation will go directly to the two women, their care and effort to return them home.

Prince Albert Firefighters wanted to throw their support behind the two injured women.

“As an IAFF local, we stand united in support of these two paramedics. We ask our fire family and our extended community to help however you can. Whether it’s donating, sharing their story, or sending your prayers. Every gesture helps,” said the group on their own social media.

The fundraiser is less than 24 hours old and was at $47,000 by 2 p.m. on April 21. Some of the larger donations came from the Dutchak family, which owns Parkland Ambulance, based in Prince Albert.
