Spring starts with grass fires and a burning ban

With the departure of the snow and while waiting for grass to turn green, wildfire season has begun.

On April 21, the RM of Prince Albert announced a fire ban, which means that no lighting of open fires is allowed, and all existing burn permits are suspended. Fireworks are also prohibited.

Nearby, the RM of Buckland’s fire department has dealt with multiple grass fires in the last several weeks.

On April 16, crews were called to a re-kindled fire on Gardener Road and said the situation was aggravated by 57 km/hour winds.

Firefighters found a ‘very fast-moving fire’ that was threatening structures near Acorn and Cloarec Roads. The department ended up asking for a response crew and emergency response team to help out from the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency.

With some intense effort, crews were able to put out the fires with no damage to structures or people.

The fire was originally a controlled burn that got away in the dry grass. Buckland firefighters responded to nine emergency callouts in 16 days.

More insight into how this year’s wildfire situation is expected to play out will be shared by SPSA on Wednesday.
