The Saskatchewan government is investing over $1.8 million this construction season to upgrade infrastructure at eight community airports, including facilities in La Ronge, Nipawin, and Tisdale.

Through the province’s Community Airport Partnership (CAP) program, the Ministry of Highways will contribute approximately $935,910 toward the total project costs, with participating communities funding the remaining estimated $939,228.

In La Ronge, the investment will support the second phase of improvements to the airport’s drainage system, with a total project cost of $550,000, equally shared between the province and the town.

Nipawin’s airport is set for runway and taxiway rehabilitation, a $320,000 project also funded on a 50/50 basis. Tisdale will undertake the second phase of its runway resurfacing project, with a total cost of $503,320, including a $250,000 provincial contribution.

“Air ambulances, firefighting and policing services, agriculture and other industries rely on local airports across Saskatchewan to meet the needs of businesses and communities,” Highways Minister David Marit said in a statement Friday.

“These infrastructure investments position rural and northern communities for growth, while strengthening our great province.”

Other communities receiving CAP funding this year include:

  • Assiniboia: Rehabilitation of taxiway and air ambulance loading area ($90,865 total cost; $45,433 provincial contribution).
  • Esterhazy: Runway and apron revitalization ($159,000 total cost; $79,500 provincial contribution).
  • RM of Eye Hill No. 382: Municipal airport rehabilitation project ($127,365 total cost; $63,683 provincial contribution).
  • Moose Jaw: Crack filling at the municipal airport ($40,000 total cost; $20,000 provincial contribution).
  • Yorkton: Crack sealing and south runway joint repair ($84,588 total cost; $42,294 provincial contribution).

Since 2007, the province has invested $12 million through CAP, funding 43 different community airports across Saskatchewan.

The CAP program supports regional, community-owned airport upgrades to runways and taxiways, lighting, security fencing, navigational systems, and other eligible projects. Projects are funded on a 50/50 cost-sharing basis between the approved recipient and the provincial government, up to a maximum of $275,000. Any additional costs are the responsibility of the funding recipient.
