So close but so so far away

Mustangs one win away from back-to-back SJHL Championships

Nearly two years in the making, the Melfort Mustangs are just one win away (in their next three games) from securing back-to-back Canterra Seeds Cups.

Melfort won their third straight finals game this season on Thursday night in Weyburn, doing so by a score of 5-1.

“We had a better start, and that’s what we wanted, and then we went from there. The biggest thing is we got one more now, and we’re going back home, so Melfort – you know the drill – pack the Palace and bring as much noise as you can. Let’s get ready to roll,” said assistant coach Tye Scherger.

“In the first game, there was a little bit of rust and a lack of effort, but it was a great wake-up call. These last three games, the boys have just bought into the right way to play.”

Not only have the Mustangs responded from a 1-0 series deficit to now have a 3-1 series lead, but they’ve also responded to situations in game.

That was truest when a goal to put them up 3-1 in Game 4 was disallowed after the refs went to video review and deemed it a hand pass.

Instead of getting frustrated, the Stangs went right back to work and scored again, this time on the powerplay, for just the second time this series, to officially make it 3-1.

Two empty netters late in the game then made it a 5-1 final.

“It was good to get the insurance, we’ve been struggling to get a goal on the powerplay, and back at home for game five, our special teams are going to be huge game, so hopefully, it just gets better from here,” Scherger added.

Kristian Coombs made 27 saves in the win and he’s allowed just three goals in four games this series.

That’s just three goals allowed on 90 shots against his net.

“He’s the best goalie in the league,” concluded Scherger.

Game 5 goes Sunday night at the Northern Lights Palace as the Blue and Green get their first crack at winning back-to-back SJHL Championships.
