Prelim dates set for Montreal Lake murder case

Apr 25, 2025 | 12:00 PM

The preliminary inquiry hearing for a man accused of second degree murder, will occur over two days in September and October.

Tristen Naytowhow’s case was discussed Friday morning at Prince Albert Provincial Court. Naytowhow’s attendance was waived and his lawyer Christopher Koban confirmed dates of Sept. 18 and Oct 23 for the hearing which will take place at Montreal Lake Cree Nation (MLCN) and is essentially considered one of the last steps before the case goes to trial.

A judge will hear the Crown’s evidence and determine if there’s enough for committal.

On June 7, 2022, officers were called to a home at MLCN and 33-year-old Chad Bird was found deceased.

Naytowhow, who was 26 at the time of his arrest, is charged with second-degree murder and possession of a firearm while prohibited.

An election has previously been made for the case to be tried by judge alone at Court of King’s Bench.

A previous prelim had been scheduled for last fall but Naytowhow dismissed his lawyer.
