Golf season officially in full swing around Prince Albert

Over the course of the last two weeks, golf courses around Prince Albert have started to open up for the season. The courses in and around Prince Albert are open as of this past weekend, while the courses north of town are still waiting for things to dry up a bit.

Starting in Prince Albert, Cooke Municipal Golf Course already had its driving range open prior, but this past weekend served as the opening weekend. Head Golf Professional Ryan Wells said the opening weekend was busy at Cooke, and the course is in great shape to start the year.

“Opening weekend was a huge success, we opened Saturday at 10 a.m. and it was a beautiful Saturday and a great way to kick off the season. Tee sheets have been filling up ever since and the driving range was open a week prior to opening day. Here in Saskatchewan, we have a long winter and everyone is anxious to get out here, and the golf course wintered extremely well so all the members and the staff are extremely happy and looking forward to the summer.”

Other courses around the city are also open, but most are hoping for a rain sometime soon to help conditions green up a little more around the course.

Kachur’s Golf Course opened two weekends ago and was recently featured by NBC’s Golf Pass as the 14th best hidden gem golf courses in all of Canada. To celebrate, Kachur’s is running a promotion where $1,000 will get you 14 rounds of golf with a cart for the season.

Also open around Prince Albert is Fairview Fairways who opened fully on April 19, while Silver Hills and Mark’s Nine both opened this past weekend.

As for the courses north of Prince Albert, they are hoping the rain stays away right now. Candle Lake, Waskesiu, and Elk Ridge are all at least a week away from opening up to the public as they wait for some snowpacked spots to melt and the course to dry up a bit.

Candle Lake in particular has some challenges to overcome this year after a fire knocked out one of their buildings last year. General Manager at Candle Lake Erin Ostlund shared they had to move a few things around at Candle Lake to make sure they can still keep providing different all their services.

“We will have a restaurant and lounge, the opening date is still TBA but we’re hoping that will be by June 15. The golf course opening is within a week or two, our admin office and our liquor store is open as usual, we have extended hours. Basically it’s Sunday to Thursday we’re open from 9 a.m. – 5:30 p.m., and we have extended hours on Friday and Saturdays from 9 a.m. – 8 p.m., that will be until the end of May and then we’ll go to summer hours. Everything is the same for the golf course and the cabins, all our rentals are the same, the only thing I could add is that the pro shop has moved from its original location to the area that was the gym previously, and the liquor store and the admin office is where the pro shop was.”

The full rebuild will start in the fall with hopes of being completed by 2027.

With Candle Lake waiting for things to dry up, so are Elk Ridge and Waskesiu. Both course are set to open up on the weekend of Friday, May 9, one full week ahead of the May long weekend.
