Local ridings up for grabs during federal election day

Apr 28, 2025 | 8:49 AM

Voters are going to the polls today as the federal election is upon us.

Canadians will elect MPs to form the 45th parliament in Ottawa.

The question for local ridings is – will they all remain Conservative blue?

The Prince Albert riding encompasses local communities including Melfort, Tisdale, Nipawin, Kinistino, Choiceland, and, of course, Prince Albert.

Randy Hoback is seeking re-election in the riding, while the NDP’s Virginia Kutzen and Christopher Hadubiak of the Liberals are looking to unseat him.

In Carlton Trail-Eagle Creek, the riding has been held by long-time MP Kelly Block. Katelyn Zimmer of the Liberal Party and the NDP’s Cheryl Loadman are the other two candidates in a massive riding that houses communities like St. Brieux, Wakaw, Lake Lenore, and Humboldt.

While Yorkton-Melville sounds like a long distance from the northeast, the constituency extends all the way up past Tobin Lake. The riding includes towns like Carrot River, Arborfield, Hudson Bay, Porcupine Plain, Naicam, and Kelvington.

Five candidates are running in Yorkton-Melville, including Luke Guimaond of the Liberal Party, the NDP’s Michaela Krakowetz, Valerie Brooks of the Green Party, Libertarian Alec Guggenmos, and incumbent Conservative MP Cathay Wagantall.

All three constituencies had a strong turnout in the advance polls.

In Carlton Trail-Eagle Creek, 16,385 people cast their ballots early. Many voters in the Prince Albert constituency voted early as well, with 13,250 constituents voting in the advance poll. Yorkton-Melville saw 11,167 people take advantage of the advance polling.

At the time of parliament’s dissolution, there were 337 MPs in Ottawa.

The Liberals had 153 MPs, the Conservatives had 120, the Bloc Quebecois had 33, the NDP had 25 seats, and the Green Party had a pair of representatives, while there were four independents.

The new 343-seat electoral map used for the first time in 2025 was set up following the census in 2021.
