Block, Wagantall react to victories in local ridings

A pair of local Conservative MPs will be returning to Ottawa.

Both Cathay Wagantall of Yorkton-Melville and Carlton Trail-Eagle Creek MP Kelly Block won with nearly 80 per cent of the vote.

Wagantall told northeastNOW she’s thrilled to be heading back to the nation’s capital.

“Oh, overwhelmed, just so thrilled to have the support last night from Yorkton-Melville,” said Wagantall. “Feels really good, really good, and I’ll certainly continue and find every way I can to work on their behalf.”

Wagantall’s victory was a little bittersweet, with the Conservative Party failing in their goal to become the next government. But she said that it was a challenging night for everyone.

“I would say…neither ourselves [nor] the Liberal Party got the result we had been hoping for in our own ways, so we’re in a different dynamic than expected,” Wagantall explained.

She said she’s looking forward to how that dynamic will play out in Ottawa, and the Official Opposition’s role is very important. Wagantall outlined what she thought when she heard Liberal Leader Mark Carney’s victory speech last night.

“The words were there; to me, there a little antithetical to what I’ve seen [of] his decisions and his choices in the past,” said Wagantall. “Very much hoping that on issues that I heard we agree on that we can truly see the results that Canadians are truly looking for.”

Wagantall was pleased to see the Conservatives won the CIVIX student vote, and that a Conservative government would have been elected had those students had a vote in the federal election. She said the Conservatives will do their best to address the concerns laid out during the campaign and heard by students.

The veteran MP, who has been in office since 2015, said she is excited to represent the riding, and work with her fellow Conservatives in Saskatchewan once again.

“I just want to say thank you to the people – again – of the riding, and also a huge voice of appreciation for all the people who worked so hard alongside of me,” Wagantall said.

The constituency encompasses several local communities, including Naicam, Watson, Porcupine Plain, Hudson Bay, and Carrot River.

Another local Conservative MP is looking forward to her return to the House of Commons.

“I’m very thankful to the voters for putting their faith in me to represent them once again as their Member of Parliament in Ottawa.”

The Conservative party once again dominated Saskatchewan, winning 13 of 14 constituencies.

“We’ll obviously have some conversations and look to getting called back to Ottawa to continue fighting for people here in Saskatchewan,” said Block.

Block said having those MPs return to the Saskatchewan caucus is important to carry a united voice to Ottawa.

“We are a very strong caucus, we’ve had a strong voice both in caucus and in the Parliament of Canada, and I believe that will continue.”

Some of the important issues during the campaign included affordability, crime, and housing.

“We will be going back to Ottawa to hold the government to account when it comes to making life more affordable for Canadians, addressing crime across this country, and ensuring that the promise of Canada is restored.”

Block has been Carlton Trail-Eagle Creek MP since 2015 and has been an elected Member of Parliament since 2008. She issued a statement about her victory.

“I’m proud to represent a riding where the values of faith, family, freedom, and hard work run deep — values that I share and will always stand up for,” part of the statement read.
