City to sign lease with sports store for Lake Country Co-op Leisure Centre outlet

The first of two planned businesses has reached a deal with the City of Prince Albert to use about 1,500 square feet of space in the new Lake Country Co-op Leisure Centre.

Council approved the lease agreement during its regular executive committee meeting on Monday and will formally pass a motion in the upcoming weeks.

“We felt it was a fit for this location. It’s going to be a service that the user groups are really going to find a benefit to,” said Director of Parks, Recreation and Culture Jody Boulet.

Prince Albert Source for Sports has operated for decades in the city and now will be able to provide crucial skate sharpening services in the arena.

The lease between the contractor and the city specifies that they can sell things like swimwear, caps, goggles, ear and nose plugs and hockey-related equipment like sticks, tape, was, skates and blades.

Lacrosse related items are also allowed but any items beyond what is specified need to be approved by the city.

The lease will help offset some of the city’s cost in operating the new acquatic centre and ice pads.

For the first four years, Source for Sports will pay $10 per square foot annually, which is just under $15,000 and will also have to cover its proportional share of the electricity.

The price will go up in year five and again in year 10 until the agreement expires 15 years from now.

The business will also have to cover its own costs for needed outfitting of the space, located between the two ice pads near the arena administration office.

Source for Sports got the rights to use the space as part of an expression of interest taken at the end of last year.

With that deal virtually complete, the city is working on one more with a food service provider.

Those expressions of interest close this week and the city will then negotiate another deal with their preferred proponent.

The two ice pads in the new building opened at the end of March but the swimming pool is not expected to open until later this summer.
