Council approves more requests through Community Grants Policy

La Ronge Council awarded nearly $10,000 at a regular council meeting on Monday for various initiatives through its Community Grants Policy.

The largest recipient was $5,000 to Sum Theatre to support drama performance on June 4 and 5 at Pre-Cam Community School and Morley Wilson Park. Council had previously supported Sum Theatre for $5,000 in 2022, 2023 and 2024.

Art in the Park set for May 10 was approved for $2,375, plus $869 of in-kind support. Art in the Park has indicated that sponsorships have been requested from other regional partners, and $1,000 has been confirmed from the Lac La Ronge Indian Band.

In 2024, Art in the Park received $2,437, which included $1,501 of financial and $936 of in-kind support.

Peanut Productions requested financial support of $3,600 to help support community theatre performances at Air Ronge’s Elks Hall from April 30 to May 3. Council ultimately decided to give $2,000 for that cause.

One application to the Community Grants Policy was denied. That came from Kay’s Kitchen, which requested $4,700, and in-kind support of $300, to help support a free family food event at an unknown date.

“When I was reading the request, I just failed to see how it aligns with the Community Grants [Policy] for just the service to community,” said Coun. Melissa McNeil.

“To me, it just seems like promoting her business as opposed to a non-profit group that’s putting on a service to the community. I definitely want to support her business, but not through a community grant because that to me doesn’t match.”

Through the Community Grants Policy, the Town of La Ronge awards $42,000 annually to different groups to host various event. Other requests approved in 2025 included $2,152 plus in-kind support for the Canadian Challenge Sled Dog Race, as well as $5,000 for Churchill Community High School.
