Ice Wolves hold spring camp in Aberdeen

The La Ronge Ice Wolves recently hosted their spring camp April 27 to 29 in Aberdeen.

“It was a great competitive camp, and players showed what they could do and there were some great games,” said Ice Wolves Head Coach Kevin Kaminksi.

“A lot of games went into a shootout. It was fun hockey to watch, and it was good to get back into the rink again.”

The spring camp consisted of 150 players organized into eight teams. That’s mostly on par with previous years with 10 teams in 2024 and eight in 2023.

“We had a great session talking about the new rink, the schooling that we have for the younger kids, and also an opportunity for kids that want to pursue college earlier to get some classes out of the way,” he explained.

“The new front office manager – that is going to be a big help. With the big move going to the Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre (JRMCC) and the renovations and a new locker room, there’s lots to be excited for up in La Ronge.”

Many of the players who attended spring camp were also invited to main camp likely to be held at the end of August. In addition, five players were added to their protected players list.

In the coming months, Kaminski and assistant coach Kyle Schneider will be attending showcases to find potential talent including one in Langley, B.C. Scouts will also be on the lookout at events in Canada and the United States, and the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League draft is set for June 10.

Kaminski noted it will be a challenge for everyone looking to secure a spot on the team for the upcoming season.

“Even the vets coming back, they have to come in and earn it. Just because they’ve been there a year, that doesn’t mean nothing,” he said.

“You’ve got to prove yourself day in and day out, every day, every shift, every practice. It’s time to get better and make a run in the playoffs this year.”
