A man wanted on a Canada-wide warrant is facing several new charges after allegedly assaulting an RCMP officer and resisting arrest in North Battleford on April 22.

RCMP say a 28-year-old man was stopped by a member of the North Battleford Crime Reduction Team (CRT) around 5 p.m. for riding a bicycle without a helmet, a violation of a municipal bylaw.

Police say the man handed the officer two knives and tried to flee but was stopped. He then allegedly assaulted and threatened the officer while resisting arrest. As the struggle continued, a second man approached and attempted to take items belonging to the suspect.

Additional officers arrived and arrested both men.

Investigators later determined the first man, who is from North Battleford, was wanted nationally for violating his parole. He was also allegedly carrying a third knife, nearly 20 grams of methamphetamine, and drug trafficking paraphernalia.

The 28-year-old is charged with assaulting a peace officer, resisting arrest, uttering threats, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and possession for the purpose of trafficking methamphetamine. He appeared in North Battleford provincial court on April 23.

The second man, a 43-year-old from North Battleford, is charged with two counts of resisting or obstructing a peace officer and is scheduled to appear in court on June 2.
