Clean-up weeks approaching for Melfort, Nipawin

Spring is here, and a couple of local communities have scheduled their spring clean-up weeks.

In Melfort, the clean-up week will be held May 20-24.

Director of Public Works Kalyna Cipywnyk told northeastNOW they’ve had many inquiries as to when the week would be scheduled.

“During this week, landfill tipping fees will be waived for Melfort residents,” said Cipwynyk.

Proof of residence, such as a utility bill or a driver’s license, will be required at the landfill for the fees to be waived.

Cipywnyk said the city has also arranged for Greenland Waste to pick up yard waste during their regular curbside pickup that week.

“Residents may place yard waste such as grass clippings, leaves, garden refuse, and short tree branches in clear plastic bags, and put those bags by their bin on the curb to be picked up on their collection day,” Cipywnyk explained.

The compost site on Central Ave. will be open starting May 12, and it will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday, Friday, and Saturday each week.

Both the landfill and compost site will be closed on Victoria Day.

Meanwhile, Spring Clean-up Days are being held in Nipawin May 20-23.

The Town has posted on their social media sites that materials need to be sorted for the landfill.

Items can be placed in the back alley for pickup, and if there is no back alley they can be placed at the curb on the side of the road.

Accepted items include scrap lumber and tree limbs and trimmings in bundles with a maximum length of five feet.

Items that won’t be accepted include furniture, appliances, scrap tires, and tree stumps.

Residents are also encouraged to use the compost collection program for grass clippings, leaves, and garden refuse. Acceptable compost items should be stored in garbage cans, compostable paper bags, or green MTN carts by 5 p.m. on Wednesdays. For people living on corner lots, compost items should be placed on the opposite side of the curb from their back alley.
