North Battleford cuts 2025 property tax hike to 4.27%

The City of North Battleford is scaling back its 2025 property tax increase following adjustments to projected costs for library security, staffing and public transit operations.

The proposed increase has been reduced from 4.39 per cent to 4.27 per cent, according to director of finance Margarita Pena, who presented the revised figures during Monday’s regular council meeting at the Don Ross Centre Chamber.

Pena said the North Battleford Public Library is facing an additional $23,500 in costs, mainly due to security needs. That amount would contribute 0.14 per cent to the overall tax increase.

Council also reviewed a revised request to fund a part-time administrative assistant for the parks and recreation department, citing increased workload after restructuring placed oversight of both the Don Ross Arena and the Civic Centre under a single manager. The original $26,000 request was reduced to $16,800 due to a delayed hiring timeline.

Meanwhile, transit service will be scaled back starting in May, with North Battleford Public Transit operating two routes until the end of April and one route for the remainder of the year. The transit budget has been reduced to $178,079 from $238,586.

“The difference in the grant request will give a decrease of taxes to 0.36 per cent of an increase,” Pena told council.

She also noted that the city recently adopted an online service request system that allows residents to report maintenance issues. The system generates between 400 and 600 requests a year for the parks and arena manager — an increase equivalent to 0.10 per cent of the tax hike.

Council voted unanimously to adopt the amended tax rate.

Pena said the finance department plans to bring updated mill rates back to council on May 12 and aims to issue tax notices by May 16.
