North Battleford to begin annual water main flushing May 5

Apr 30, 2025 | 3:53 PM

If your taps run a little rusty after dark next week, don’t panic — it’s part of North Battleford’s annual unidirectional water main flushing to maintain water quality and ensure the city’s water distribution system is functioning properly.

According to a release issued by the city Wednesday, the flushing program is scheduled to begin Monday, May 5, and is expected to take 10 to 14 days to complete, weather permitting.

This year’s flushing will take place in several areas across the city, including:

  • Along Pēyak Trail and north to Territorial Drive on the west side of 100th Street;
  • Along Railway Avenue and north to 20th Avenue on the east side of 100th Street, up to and including 105th Street;
  • The Riverview subdivision;
  • River Valley Drive.

“Water main flushing” signs will be posted nightly in affected neighbourhoods. Flushing will occur during overnight hours, and residents in those areas are advised not to use water between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m.

The city noted that flushing may take place over multiple nights on some blocks. During the day, residents may use water as normal.

Although the materials flushed from the system are harmless, the city is reminding residents to take precautions to avoid discoloured water and sediment. These include filling bathtubs or pails for toilet flushing, setting aside water for drinking and household use before 7 p.m., and shutting off appliances such as water softeners and ice makers.

Before resuming use, residents are advised to run an outdoor tap for 10 minutes or until the water runs clear.

Commercial properties in the affected areas are being contacted directly by Operations staff to discuss overnight water needs. Business owners with questions are encouraged to call City Hall at 306-445-1700.

Residents who rely on medical equipment requiring a continuous water supply are asked to notify City Hall during regular business hours.
