Potential warm record-breaking temps in the forecast for parts of Sask.

A ‘pretty large’ upper ridge that is currently over the Pacific is moving onshore and headed to Saskatchewan later this week. It will be centered over the province by Saturday and bring with it unseasonable warm temperatures.

“There’s quite a warm air mass associated with that which is going to be felt throughout the Prairies and notably within Saskatchewan. So, starting on Friday, we’re going to see the western half of the province reach temperatures near the low 20s and on Saturday we’re seeing widespread temperatures into the mid to high 20s, pretty much for all of central and southern Saskatchewan, as well as extending even up north towards Buffalo Narrows and La Loche,” said Justin Shelley, meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada.

In Prince Albert, temperatures are expected to reach 30 C on Saturday, 29 C in Battlefords and on Sunday, Melfort could reach 29 C. La Ronge will see temperatures increase slowly into next week. Shelley said they are unseasonably warm temperatures for this time of year.

“It’s quite a bit above the normal for those areas around central Saskatchewan where normal daytime highs are about 15 or 16 degrees.”

While we haven’t fully transitioned to summer, Shelley said there’s always a chance that a system in the middle of May will bring some cooler temperatures or some winter-like conditions, but the imminent forecast will bring some of the warmest temperatures Saskatchewan has seen in the first week of May in a number of years.

The last time Prince Albert got above 27 degrees during the first week of May was back in 2017 when the high reached 27.5 C. The record for the first week of May in Prince Albert was one year earlier, when a high of 32.8 was reached.

“So, we’re looking at potentially breaking some daily temperature records in the region,” said Shelley. “For instance, the May 3 record for Saturday in Prince Albert was 27.8 C set back in 1897, so likely going to see that temperature and a number of other daily temperatures broken across the province.”

In North Battleford, the daily record for May 3 is 30.1 which was set in 2016. In Melfort, the May 3 record was set in 1980 when it reached 29.5.

A cold front will move through late Sunday, but Shelley said east central and southeastern areas of the province will likely still stay in the mid to high 20 degree range while that upper ridge rebuilds sometime early next week.
