A man from Edmonton and another from Clearwater River Dene Nation have been arrested after a shooting on Canoe Lake Cree First Nation.

RCMP were called to the community at 12:45 am on Sunday, April 27 and found a man who had been shot. He was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers then located a suspect vehicle in the community following some investigation, and when members tried to pull it over, the driver refused to stop.

A chase ensued for the next 30 minutes, and the occupants kept throwing items out of the vehicle window as they fled. Pursuing officers had to swerve their vehicles to avoid the items. One of the occupants shone a flashlight at the RCMP cruiser to try to distract the officer driving.

The suspect vehicle then left the roadway on Highway 903 and came to a stop before the driver ran off into the surrounding woods. The passenger was arrested at the scene.

The driver was later located and arrested with the assistance of a police dog and air support.

As a result, 21-year-old Keegan Janvier from Clearwater River Dene Nation and 22-year-old Deon Libsekal from Edmonton now face charges of aggravated assault, fleeing from police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and multiple gun-related charges.

They are scheduled to appear in Meadow Lake Provincial Court on May 5.
