Valley Hill Youth Treatment Centre reopens

A youth treatment facility in Prince Albert has reopened and is looking forward to a fresh start.

Operations at the Valley Hill Youth Treatment Centre were suspended in August last year and Meyers Norris Penny Ltd. was appointed as administrator.

At the time, the provincial Ministry of Health said there were operational concerns at the facility and the patients that were using its services had been discharged and connected with other forms of support.

Now, the centre has been reopened following a pipe ceremony conducted by Elder Lorne Waditika of Wahpeton First Nation.

The Prince Albert Grand Council, provincial government and City of Prince Albert all had representatives on hand. The YWCA and General Employees Union, staff and other participants gathered on April 29 to “commence a renewal of the services at the Centre”, according to a news release issued the following day.

A teepee was placed outside of the facility for the pipe ceremony.

“The ceremony, held in a teepee placed by the Healing Lodge, celebrated a fresh start while connecting with the Creator, fostering unity and peace, and seeking healing and guidance for the community,” said the release.

Valley Hill provides treatment for youth 12 to 17 who have addictions issues and is run jointly between the PAGC, the province and the local community.
