Carlton Comprehensive High School brings kooky, creepy family to life

May 1, 2025 | 10:00 AM

A broadway style musical, opening this week at Carlton Comprehensive High School, is kooky, spooky and will have you snapping your fingers.

The Addams’ Family Musical represents the first musical done by the school’s theatre department. Noting the number of lines, choreography and music involved in a two-and-a-half hour show, Director Kayleigh Skomorowski said the students have done a great job.

“I was a bit worried but honestly they have risen to the challenge and have just blown me away,” she said. “I don’t think they quite realize how good they are and how great the show is.”.

The adaptation of the classic story, is in Skomorowski’s words, a continuation of some of the different narratives. Wednesday has grown up, met a boy and said yes to his marriage proposal. The plot thickens when he goes to meet the family and learns they come from very different places.

The fictional characters created by Charles Addams originally appeared in 1938 in a series of stand alone comics but were later brought to life on the big screen and in more recent years in a popular Netflix series. When asked why she thinks the characters still connect to today’s youth, Skomorowski replied they are timeless.

“Teenagers are always kind drawn to things that make them feel unique or special or like they they’re carving out their own past so of course you know the Addams would fit into that teenage rebellion,” she explained.

Prior to coming to Carlton this year, Skomorowski previously worked in Rosthern and St Mary High School and has been involved in a number of musical projects. She explained the idea for the project was first pitched to administration at the beginning of the school year.

“With it also being the first musical that’s ever happened in this high school, I wanted something that maybe your crowd that’s maybe not tapped into the world of musical theatre would still appreciate and resonate with,” she said.

Auditions were held last January and the show’s final production involves 36 cast members and 14 students doing tech. Chord Fehr plays Wednesday’s love interest. He has previously been involved in numerous Broadway North Junior productions and is most recently well known for playing Willy Wonka in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

“It’s a different environment with some familiar people, some new people. It’s been really good. We did a lot of great work throughout all of our rehearsals, and I’m happy with how it turned out,” he said.

The show runs Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights at the schools cafetorium. Fehr encouraged the community to come out and watch.

“You’d be contributing to something that will continue to happen and to the people who have put in the work. This is their first musical, it took a lot of courage to show up and register and they deserve to have their work appreciated.”

Rachel Gibson plays Grandma and said she loves being part of this and the school’s first musical.

“I’ve been doing the productions at Carlton since Grade 9 and doing a musical is something totally different, but I’m loving it,” she said.

Gibson acknowledged portraying iconic characters is no small feat.

“With every production, there’s pressure, but I feel like all the cast is handling it really well.”

Tickets can be purchased at the school’s main office or at the door. They are $20 for adults and $15 for kids.
