Team Saskatchewan A rolled their way to victory in Saskatoon this past weekend, capturing gold at the Inter Provincial 5 Pin Bowling Championship.

The team representing Western Saskatchewan saw bowlers Leonard Lapierre (Lasburn) Bridget Berg (Rosetown), Yvonne Markewich (Biggar), Mat Harrabek (Biggar) and coach Alvin Anderson (Lloydminster) team up to take on some of the best teams from across the country.

The event started off with a 16-game round robin before the top six teams advanced to the playoffs, and team lead Lapierre said they had to take on some tough competition.

“We took on teams from Alberta, B.C., Ontario and even smaller places like the Northwest Territories, but we ended up finishing second in the round robin, and we got a bye in the first round, which was great cause then we’re guaranteed the chance of bowling for a medal,” he said.

Following their bye, they played a team from Prince Edward Island and after a slow start, began to get the ball rolling and eventually ended up winning to advance to the finals.

“We started off decent and then we started playing good and we were talking like ‘hey, let’s keep it going, let’s aim for the top’ and it kind of went on from there,” said Lapierre.

In the final match, they played against a team from Northern Ontario, and it came down the wire, but Team Saskatchewan A was able to pull through and come out with the victory to claim the gold.

Lapierre credited the whole effort from the team as the reason for the win.

“It was great that it was a team event because the team really stepped up, I couldn’t ask for anything better, all three basically carried us to the win,” he said

Apart from winning the gold medal, Lapierre also hoped that the win would help shed light to the sport of bowling in the community.

“People should just get out and try it because you never know what you may like, it’s a cheap alternative to other sports and it’s lots of fun,” said Lapierre.
