Smart meter deployment begins in tri-communities

SaskPower has begun installing smart meters in the tri-communities.

That’s according to a SaskPower spokesperson who told larongeNOW in an email that 2,111 residential smart meters will be deployed in the La Ronge and Air Ronge areas.

In total, roughly 500,000 residential smart meters will be deployed across the province, and crews have already completed more than 25 per cent of total smart meter installations.

“Smart meter installations have already begun in the La Ronge area and are expected to be complete within the next two weeks,” the email noted.

“Province wide mass deployment is expected to take several more years to complete.”

The email adds that smart meters are one of the building blocks of a modern power grid. They also allow SaskPower to pinpoint the source of outages and get power restored faster.

Having a smart meter means billing is based on actual power use each month, eliminating the need for estimates and manual reads. Smart meters provide detailed information about power usage to help customers conserve power and save money.
