Drone drug bust at Sask Pen results in three year sentence

A man charged after a drug bust at a Saskatchewan Penitentiary involving the use of a drone has taken full responsibility for the crime and received a three-year prison sentence.

Cy Sharp appeared April 16 at Prince Albert Provincial Court and, according to court records obtained by paNOW, entered a guilty plea to possession for the purpose of trafficking.

A lifetime firearms prohibition was also ordered.

The incident dates back to last fall, when a drone was observed carrying a package by way of a tow rope.

Correctional Service Canada (CSC) immediately informed Saskatchewan RCMP’s Prince Albert General Investigation Section (GIS).

As a result of their investigation, staff at the prison located and seized approximately 83 grams of methamphetamine, a small amount of cannabis concentrate, tobacco and cell phones/chargers.

On Dec. 3, three inmates were arrested. Sharp was captured on camera receiving the packages and distributing them to other inmates. It’s not clear, however, if he knew what was in the packages.

Also charged in the case were Andrew Corrigal and Donnely Nanaquewetung, and both have pending court dates this month.

At the time of the incident, a spokesperson for the union representing correctional officers told paNOW drones have become a big problem and are difficult to track.
